‘We have learnt that we need to be grateful for small things’

At one end of the road where Martine McCutcheon lives with her husband Jack McManus and their five-year-old son Rafferty is a willow that the little boy has chosen as a wishing tree.

“We go under there and he likes to make a wish and he asks for the world to be made better. Kids are so sweet and so pure and it puts everything that is going on in perspective. Then, after the third time, he made a wish for something from Ghostbusters . When Jack asked him: What happened about everyone getting better?’ he said: I’ve already done that a few times,’” she laughs, grateful for the normality of family life.
