THEY’VE been called the queues of desperation – snaking rows of people who often stand in line all night in the hope of receiving something the next morning to take home to feed their families.

The right to food may be one of the most fundamental human rights, but for millions of South Africans who live below the poverty line, affording even the basics has become impossible since the lockdown devastated the economy.
