It’s enough to tug at the strings of the hardest heart. Hundreds of thousands of South Africans, already reeling under poverty and hardship, have been driven to the brink of despair as lockdown effectively brought the country to a grinding halt.

Children who depended on school-feeding schemes to fill their tummies are going hungry as schools remain closed. Parents who relied on piece work to put food on the table are penniless. Many domestic workers and gardeners have had their lifeline cut off.
