Go! Drive & Camp

Camp in the red kalahari sand

You don’t head to the Kalahari for just a day or two. Your ammo crates are chock-a-block with groceries and long-life milk; the long-range tank and jerry cans are full; and you had to have booked your stand at this destination months in advance.

So, if you’re heading north from Upington, chances are you’re either going to visit the Kgalagadi or visit the Botswana section of this transfrontier park or perhaps you’re heading to southern Namibia.

After 200 km you’re already in the Kalahari. At Askham you can pick up those last few items and refuel, because it will be a while before you see civilisation again. From here it is another 75 km north to the gate of the Kgalagadi and 85 km west to Namibia’s Rietfontein border post.

By now, the kids are tired of playing on their phones, you’re sick of sitting behind the wheel and there are only a few crumbs left in the container that held the Romany Creams. Why don’t you rather stop over instead of torturing yourself? Stretch your legs for a day or two and get to your destination far better rested.

The Molopo Kalahari Lodge is just 15 km away and the Kgalagadi Lodge about 50 km along. These two spots have lovely campsites where you can really relax, and before you know it, you will stop here again on
