THE Grand Canyon in the American state of Arizona is one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders.
The canyon, carved out of the rock through erosion by water from the Colorado River over millions of years, is 446km long, 29km at its widest and on average about 1 600m deep.
A canyon can also be called a gorge, a ravine or a kloof, though these are usually smaller and narrower than a canyon.
