FAST FACTS

Spectacled Flying Fox

ith straw-coloured rings around their eyes, leathery looking wings and a fox-like snout, it’s easy to see where the Spectacled Flying gets its name. Also known as the spectacled fruit bat, it is part of the megabat family, and can be found in north-eastern Queensland, Papua New Guinea and nearby islands, parts of Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands. It was listed as a threatened species until February 2019, when the Australian Government upgraded its status to endangered after almost a third of the population died in a heatwave in late 2018.
