Why Cats Purr

Spend enough time with a cat and you are sure to experience its rumbling purr. While we often associate purring with a cat’s pleasure during petting, there are many other, more complicated reasons, as to why a cat may purr.

Scientists have found that cats purr through intermittent signalling of the laryngeal and diaphragmatic muscles. These muscles vibrate and act as a valve for air flowing past the voice box. Cats are able to purr both during inhalation and exhalation, creating the impression of continuous purring!
