EAT SHOOT LOVE

If you visit Melbourne-based photographer Ewen Bell’s Website (the address is at the end of this article), you’ll find it’s a very busy place indeed. There’s travel photography, bird photography, a bunch of photo essays, pictures from recent shoots, articles about many varied aspects of photography, information about his bespoke photo tours and workshops, and details about a new book titled ReIMAGINE. It doesn’t take long to get the impression that Ewen is somebody who lives and breathes photography, and isn’t really happy unless he’s behind a camera.

His slogan is, ‘It’s never just black and white’, and he says his guiding principle is, ‘Go slow. Get closer. Look for the light’. Not just sound advice for travel photography, but for approaching photography in general. Given the huge amount of content on his main Website – and another he runs that’s dedicated to travel photography – Ewen is clearly also very busy, spending a lot of time in any given year on the go. Now he’s also a self-confessed “bird nerd”, having discovered just how rewarding bird photography can be, despite the many challenges. Busy? He wouldn’t have it any other way.

“The reason travel is so powerful for me is the way it takes you into the unexpected. Not knowing what lies around the corner is my favourite thing. Serendipity is not just the joy of travel, but the joy of photography. Capturing an image you never imagined is my goal every day. I let the light guide me first and foremost, and look within that light for moments that love the camera. It’s a style of work that demands flexibility, and pushes the technology to the limits. As cameras get better, however, so does our potential in photography.”

Interestingly, a lot of travel
