For more than a century, steel was the material of choice for bicycle frames. In recent decades, aluminium, carbon fibre, titanium and even bamboo have broadened frame-builders’ options, but for some riders there is still no substitute for steel.
Chief among steel’s qualities are strength, durability and longevity. Although steel is heavier than other frame materials, it is easily repaired if damaged, and does not suffer from fatigue as aluminium does. Nor do chips and dings compromise strength and safety as they do on carbon frames.
