UMBLEWEEDS ROLL DOWN the streets in Pioneertown, California, like something out of an old-school Western. Located in the high desert, not far from Joshua Tree National Park, the tiny downtown was, in fact, built by Hollywood investors in the 1940s as a film and television set, complete with saloons, stables, and a jail. Tourists wander the picturesque streets to this day.
