The return to Tassie stag
Pausing for a moment to unlock the entry gate of the expansive Tassie grazing property, I took a deep breath of the crisp, pure air and refreshed my memories of the unfolding landscape. Nine stag seasons had passed since my last pursuit of the wild fallow here. I was now as keen as mustard to scour the turf once again for a big gnarly-antlered veteran. According to the locals, the deer were more plentiful than ever, so my chances were good.
A big stag was my main priority, but not to the exclusion of opportunities for nice meat animals. Since I also had tags for cull males and two does, I could not pass up too many chances waiting for stags. On our drive from the entrance to the hut where we would be staying, we saw two big herds of deer which we reckoned totalled in excess of 100 animals! The local word did not seem exaggerated.
