FLUCTUATING hormones can play havoc in the run-up to and during menopause. ‘As oestrogen levels fall in the perimenopausal and menopausal periods, there are significant changes in the skin,’ says Dr Emma Wedgeworth, consultant dermatologist who has been working with menopause skincare line Emepelle (). ‘Skin gets thinner and less elastic, and for many women the hormonal changes around this time can also trigger acne. It is caused by excess sebum (a mixture of oils and waxes), produced by the sebaceous glands, that blocks pores and creates the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive.’
