With new art fairs popping up left, right and center, existing brands face the challenge of staying relevant and distinct from the competition. Art Busan and Frieze New York returned this year with refreshed programs and, in the latter case, a revamped layout. However, fewer high-end sales at Frieze New York left a number of galleries wondering if participation was worth the rental cost. By contrast, galleries seem more willing to show at Chinese fairs, with the inaugural editions of Art Chengdu and Beijing’s JINGART attracting positive participant feedback.
