There’s no doubt about it, New Zealand’s road toll is nothing to be proud of. Particularly the recent trend for a year-on-year increase in the number of deaths.
From a high of 795 deaths in 1987 the number had actually been falling – to a low of just 284 in 2009 and 253 in 2013 – before trending back up, to 378 in 2017 and 380 in 2018.
