Our society today is a throwaway society; most manufactured items have a limited shelf life and are discarded after a certain period. Repair is a thing of the past and it is normally far easier to replace than rejuvenate.

This was certainly not the case in the 19th century as far as guns were concerned. Just look at the many thousands of antique and vintage guns that come up for sale with new barrels, replacement stocks and so on.
