“I was on a boat in a village in Bihar when I saw these two women, Shinta and Samundri, swiftly moving through the water,” says photographer Gideon Mendel. “I was surprised but I soon realised they were walking on a road that was higher than the houses. They seemed to be familiar with their environment; they’d just walked to the shop to buy some cooking oil. They didn’t stop for long, they were in a hurry to get home. They didn’t want [anyone] to steal their things.”
