HRT remains one of the most controversial and hotly debated health topics of our generation, which is a shame because it comes with a long list of benefits and only a few risks. Given the multiple conflicting studies that have been conducted since HRT was first introduced in the UK in 1965, I wanted to run through the latest advice, risks and benefits – and bust a few myths along the way.
What’s in HRT?
HRT contains the hormone oestrogen to replace what our ovaries no longer make – or produce in declining levels during the perimenopause. Many standard UK and European HRT formulations are plant-derived from the oestrogen-rich yam plant and are body-identical.
