STUDENTS HAVE NUMEROUS ADVANTAGES and opportunities, both in classwork and activities, that many of their parents didn’t have. Technology has opened up exciting avenues for learning and influenced alternative techniques for teaching. It’s a whole new educational environment. And it’s one that can be very demanding on kids.
“We live in a complex world,” says Shants Hart, associate head of school for external affairs with Park Tudor School. “We live with diverse people. And we have a lot of problems that we’re counting on our children to be able to solve. It’s a tall order when you think about it.”
A strong scholastic background is more important than ever before, and parents can make a huge difference in their children’s achievement by being actively involved in their schools and academic development.
ESTABLISHING A PATTERN
PARENTS CAN START KIDS off on the right foot by creating a dedicated space that is conducive to study—a quiet retreat away from distractions such as cellphones, televisions, and video games. It should be well lit and supplied with everything your offspring will need. A kitchen is often a good choice, but your child’s bedroom is not ideal.
