Being treated for breast cancer is undoubtedly daunting and difficult, and the prospect of a mastectomy – losing one or both breasts – can be devastating. ‘Cancer is extremely traumatic and once the physical symptoms are dealt with, the psychological damage remains,’ says Victoria Rose, a consultant plastic surgeon who specialises in breast surgery and reconstruction after cancer.* ‘Following a mastectomy, women face a constant and daily reminder of what they have gone through, but there are transformative options available that can give them their lives back.’ We give an outline on reconstruction surgery and hear how two women had their breasts – and self-confidence – restored.
