Lost and Found

I am not nostalgic. I do not wish for the good old days. It seems to me that today is the good day. I am, however, endlessly intrigued by the details of history. I am curious about how human life and the world around us change; I am interested in how we carve out solutions to the challenges we inevitably face moving through our lives. I am interested in community life.

In the spring of 1970, I bought my farm on the Maple Ridge Road in the St. Lawrence County town of DeKalb. I was 23, born and raised in Manhattan, didn’t know how to drive, and until I headed north on a search for land with my soon-to-be first husband driving his father’s car, I had no idea where St. Lawrence County was located. We moved to the farm the following spring, or what we thought was spring, very early March. We arrived at 10 p.m.,
