Model Ikram Abdi Omar applied the same principles “learning” about the fashion industry as she did studying biomedical science at Bristol University.
“I have become really interested in fashion. I’ve read up on it and the people within it, so when I go to events I know who everyone is,” the 23-year-old model tells us pragmatically when we meet in London’s Stoke Newington after her HFM cover shoot. “Even my agent will say, ‘How do you know who all of these people are?’. I’ll say, ‘I’ve been reading about them for a while now’.”
It would seem that when Ikram directs attention at something, she flourishes. And, becoming a model has been a dream of hers since dressing up with friends and staging catwalk shows aged eight. So when, whilst at a smaller agency, she was scouted then signed (on the spot) by Premier Model Management in spring 2018, she took the chance wholeheartedly, moving to London from Bristol and putting her degree on the back burner. And, in December, she became the first hijab-wearing model to appear in Burberry’s festive campaign.
