Back in the 1990s the sportsbike scene was headlined by a certain range of exotic red bikes built in Bologna. By the end of 1996, Ducati’s gorgeous V-twin engined superbikes had won six WSB championships, not to mention the hearts of thousands of owners and fans. As far as desirability was concerned, the fabulous 916 sportsbike and its derivatives set the standard. It took a while for the Japanese, better known at the time for their 750cc inline four-cylinder engined machines (Honda FireBlade excepted), to join the V-twin party.
