My grandfather, SK, and grandmother, who everyone called Aunty Ma, had three daughters and we all lived next to each other. My grandparents helped build a temple in a township called Umhlatuzana in KZN. I was around 12 when I started helping my grandmother cook and serve at the temple. I remember peeling large amounts of vegetables and cleaning herbs. A favourite dish I learned to make from my (pots) of briyani were also impressive – she could feed at least 100 people from one large pot.
