Past editors reflect on their tenure

My association with AP goes back to 1984, when I joined as news editor. Five years later I became editor, and over the next 473 issues there was never a dull moment. The 1990s were a decade of great change in photography and publishing. Perhaps the change that proved most beneficial to AP was my decision toduo of John Downing and printer Larry Bartlett. Bartlett became a regular columnist, along with other high-profile ‘stars' like David Bailey, Bob Carlos Clarke, Eamonn McCabe and Mike Maloney, adding gravitas to AP with their expert advice and often controversial views. Arguably my most memorable issue bore the famous ‘Killed by the Camera' cover, published the week after Princess Diana died. AP's team came in over the weekend to remake the cover and nine pages – without being late on sale!
