ROOM TO GROW

Someone should write a book about the influence of Italians on gardening in Australia. Take Pier and Charlie, who grow vegetables at home in the Geelong suburb of Bell Post Hill as well as on a 1000m2 block they own in nearby Bell Park, now covered with vegie gardens and fruit trees.

Charlie was 19 when he arrived from Messina Province in Sicily during the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He stopped briefly in Geelong before going to join his brother cutting cane in Queensland.

After three years he relocated to Geelong, where he spent most of his working life
