HINTS FOR HAPPY HARVESTING

There is always something to harvest in a productive kitchen garden and September seems to push the gardener into harvesting overdrive. There can be a temptation to grab and tug at speed, in order to fill baskets in a short space of time.

This may mean fast results for the kitchen but it can also lead to damaged stems or broken roots and it may harm the future potential of plants.

It can often be quicker to fetch a fork to lift carrots than to dig fingers into soil in an attempt to pull out a stubborn root, and why not carry a cutting tool to slice through a cauliflower stem rather than hurt your back trying to pull up the whole thing?
