Quilters Companion

Baltimore Blooms Part 5 FINAL

Our sew-along with Deborah Dorward’s charming appliqué quilt, Baltimore Blooms, comes to an end. In the past four issues the 16 blocks have been presented, and on the following pages we feature instructions for completing the quilt.

The amazing red and green Baltimore Album quilts of the 1800s probably would have used only one or two types of flowers throughout the quilt, remaining consistent with the same green and red fabric repeated, however Deborah was inspired by so many of the wonderful quilts made so long ago that she simply couldn’t choose only one flower. With the reproduction fabrics so readily available nowadays, it is fun to include as many different fabrics as your heart desires.

Finally, Deborah shares this thought with us: “I can’t list every block or quilt that I have used for inspiration to reproduce my quilt, as I’ve pored over hundreds of antique quilts to create this. I acknowledge that my quilt is only original in its format design now, and all the originality goes to those remarkable women who made their quilts so many years ago and without any of the modern quiltmaking tools we use today. I credit and thank them and pay homage to their amazing work.”

for such a fine-looking quilt — many #baltimoreblooms and #quilterscompanion
