Perilla: from salads to sniffles

Perilla (Perilla frutescens) is an aromatic leafy vegetable native to mountainous areas from India to China but mainly cultivated and consumed in Korea, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. It’s a member of the mint family and is used for both culinary and medicinal purposes. There are many varieties but the red-leafed and greenleafed varieties are the most common.
