Tomatoes are the most popular backyard vegetable crop. The number-one reason people give for growing their own tomatoes is flavour. Most agree that no tomato tastes better than one picked from a homegrown plant.
It can be very disappointing when the actual tomato doesn’t match your taste anticipations, though. The best flavours develop in tomatoes when they ripen on the vine in warm conditions. A long, slow ripening encourages the formation of sugars, which add to the sweetness and flavour of the tomato. Varietal choice, soil, nutrition, watering and management also play a part in taste.
