KALE FOR BRAINS
As you age there can be a degree of mental decline, but this does not have to be the case. In searching for ways to maintain healthy brain function as we age, most studies have focused on older adults after there has already been a period of decline. This study, however, included adults aged 25 to 45 and focused on a nutrient called lutein. Lutein accumulates in brain tissue and also in the eyes. Researchers measured lutein levels and then measured neural activity in the brain while the subjects performed a task that tested attention. The results showed that middleaged participants with higher levels of lutein had neural responses that were more on par with younger individuals than with their peers. In
