SUMMARY INFORMATION AND PURPOSE:
My name is Michael William Kelly and my interest is in teaching electrical engineering power classes or labs.
My background is in electrical engineering design and system studies for Black & Veatch. I was employed there for over 38 years. I have also been employed at a number of teaching entities in Missouri and Kansas both full and part time but mainly at the University of Missouri at Kansas City for 41 years. I am very familiar with FERPA, ABET and HLC obligation/accrediting requirements.
My life is teaching as I will not squander the education, experiences and the time others devoted to my training. I want and need to pass this on.
My purpose for seeking full or part time electrical engineering teaching employment is the university (UMKC and specifically the School of Computing and Engineering) is focusing on research based grant funds as the state and federal entities are providing less and less financial support. Due to the school’s economic hardship, I purchased most of the equipment in what is now Power Lab and have maintained the equipment for well over a decade. I do not qualify for grants as I do not have a PhD degree. The university has been kind enough to allow me to teach here for many decades and to be allowed to be a member of the Faculty for the last decade, but they need money and I am unable to help. I have no teaching certificates. I only have a BSEE degree from University of Missouri, Rolla granted in 1971.
SUMMARY OF DETAILS:
Present Employer, UMKC: University of Missouri at Kansas City (School of Computing and Engineering {SCE}, and in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering {CSEE}. I am a member of faculty in CSEE. I also teach at Rockhurst University.
I developed the courses marked with an asterisk (*) and teach the following:
• ANCH150 – “Introduction to Engineering”, Co-Taught with Dr. Darran Cairns who did most of the work
• ECE250 – “Engineering Mechanics and Thermodynamics”,
• ECE402 – “Senior Design I”,
• ECE401SG, ECE5590SG – “Smart Grid”,
• ECE403WI – “Senior Design II”,
• ECE401KI – “Substation Design",
• ECE436 – “Power Electronics I”,
• ME/ECE460, ME5501P – “Electromechanical Conversion I”, Mechanical Dept.,
• *ME461 – “Power Lab, Undergrads”, Mech Dept., (purchased some of the equipment and repaired all
myself)
• ECE461 – “Power Lab for Undergraduates”, Elec Dept., (purchased most of the equipment and repaired all
myself)
• ECE5590PL – “Advanced Power Lab”, Mech Dept., (purchased most of the equipment and repaired all
myself)
• ECE462 – "Symmetrical Components",
• ECE466 – “Power Systems I”,
• ECE470, ECE5569 – "Reliability of Electric Power Systems",
• ECE5536 – “Power Electronics II”,
• *ECE5590AE – “Auxiliary Electric System Design”,
• ECE5590PQ – “Power Quality”,
• *ECE5590SP – “Transmission System Planning”,
• *ECE5590IE – “Industrial Engineering”,
• *Many Such Courses as ECE-5597 – “Directed Reading Advanced Topic Courses” on many Topics.
• ECE5664 – “Transients in Electric Power Systems” and Page 2 of 2
• ECE5670 – “HV DC Transmission Systems”.
here at the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) and in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE).
I have been an adjunct at UMKC since 1978 (where I taught as a substitute for Dr. J. Tudor from UM, Columbia) and became a member of the faculty in the School of Computing and Electrical Engineering (UMKC’s SCE) in 2010 once I retired from Black & Veatch (B&V). I have been teaching the previously listed courses on a revolving basis with as few as 4 per semester (spring and fall semesters) and as many as eight (8) per semester on now two occasions, which I would rather not remember.
Previous Employer, Black & Veatch:
Prior to and concurrent with the UMKC experience, I worked for Black & Veatch for 38 years (1970 into 2009) as a power plant, substation and forensic engineer and retired with the title of “Head of the System Study Group”. I hired my replacement, Dr. S. Sankar (approximately five years prior to retiring from B&V). Dr Sankar now holds the position of Head of the System Study group.
I have had the opportunity to travel a great deal domestically and overseas while charged with the forensic engineering title.
