He started as a cop walking the beat in Harlem. He moved up the ranks very fast to the rank of Captain with the NYPD and had a wide variety of assignments including: In-Charge of a Detective Squad; Supervisor of the Vice Squad in lower Manhattan; Lieutenant in Charge of the first experimental Street Crime Unit in Bedford Stuyvesant that was so successful that the idea was implemented city wide and is now an important part of every major department in the nation. As a Captain in the South Bronx, he was responsible for the investigation of many police officer involved shootings and other unusual occurrences in the Bronx.
He also wrote major parts of the Police Manual including revising and editing the disciplinary procedures for the NYPD along with his friend Joe D. McNamara. The author, as producer, along with then Lt. Bobby Burke created the first “Shoot, Don’t Shoot” training film in the U.S. called “Moment of Decision”. It was used by as many as 150 other departments to train officers. The writing and creation of 14 TV training programs called “The Police Commissioner” along with speeches for the Commissioner was another major accomplishment.
Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of his life was raising five children as a single parent while running a private security company employing over 140 people, going to the State University of New York for his graduate degrees and working full-time as a Professor all at the same time.
