Introduction

Amanda Palmer spent her early adulthood standing stock-still on a milk crate, her face painted white and a hat at her feet. She was a living statue dressed as a bride, waiting for strangers to drop a dollar or two into the hat in exchange for a moment of uninterrupted human connection.
