Die Rede Pro Cluentio mit ihrer Geschichte über 'Sex und Crime' bietet über ihren literarischen Wert hinaus einen einmaligen Einblick in die römische Lebenswelt der späten Republik, die als Hintergrund der Literatur und Dichtung der Zeit von höchstem Interesse ist. Obwohl die Frage nach den Göttern im Geschichtswerk Herodots so oft schon zum Gegenstand der Forschung geworden ist, wird sie in dieser Studie erneut gestellt. Ausgehend von einer detaillierten Analyse der Traumsequenz zu Beginn des siebten Buches wird der Versuch unternommen, die traditionellen Fragen - Warum greifen die Götter ein? Ist Xerxes schuldig? Läßt sich das Eingreifen der Götter mit dem wissenschaftlichen Anspruch eines Historikers verbinden? Oder ist Herodot ein naiver, dem alten Glauben verpflichteter Geschichtenerzähler? - zu überwinden und Herodots Rede von den Göttern im Kontext des Intellektualismus des 5. Jahrhunderts zu erhellen.

Die bisherige Beschäftigung mit der Anaximanderauslegung Heideggers beschränkt sich auf Zeitschriften- und Buchbeiträge in Sammelwerken. Der nun vorliegende monographische Band schließt dahingehend zum einen diese Lücke in der Heideggerforschung, indem er vor allem der "Holzwege"-Abhandlung "Der Spruch des Anaximander" als einem Zeugnis der genannten Auseinandersetzung systematisch wie kommentierend nachdenkt. Dabei wird das Verständnis Heideggers nicht als ein sekundäres historisches beleuchtet, sondern sein Gedankengang ebenso wie derjenige des Spruchs selbst als primärer geschichtlicher des abendländischen Denkens bedacht. Gerade in diesem Ansatz und Vorgehen stellt der Band zum anderen - über die zusammenfassende historische Überlieferungs- und Rezeptionsgeschichte des Anaximanderfragments im Ersten Teil hinaus - einen Beitrag zur Klassischen Philologie dar. Er entwickelt einen in dieser systematisch-methodischen Form bisher unbeachtet gebliebenen Zugang zum Hören und Übersetzen der Griechischen Sprache. Ferner wird insbesondere durch den ausführlichen Sachindex sowohl der seinsgeschichtlichen Erforschung Heideggerischer wie Anaximandrischer Grundworte ein philologisches Hilfsmittel an die Hand gegeben, als auch umgekehrt dem Klassischen Philologen ein möglicher Einstieg eröffnet in die Erschließung der eigentümlichen Begrifflichkeit anfänglicher, frühester wie spätester abendländischer Aufmerksamkeit für das, was ist.

Introduzione In cerca di nuove vie per la poesia elegiaca 1. Il III libro delle elegie di Properzio si era chiuso con un addio: a Cinzia, alla sua bellezza elogiata più di quanto meritasse, ai versi scritti per lei da chi, ora, si pentiva e si vergognava di aver reso famosa con la sua poesia una donna che non valeva la pena di cantare (3,24,1–8). Recuperata finalmente la ragione senza l’ausilio di fattucchiere, medici, amici, Properzio capiva di essersi reso ridicolo col suo lungo e assiduo servitium amoris e garantiva ai lettori una tenace resistenza di fronte alle suppliche e alle lacrime di Cinzia: come non prestar fede, d’altronde, a chi sulla donna celebrata sin dal primo verso del monobiblos scagliava ora le sue dirae, con una feroce previsione dell’inesorabile arrivo della vecchiaia, dei capelli bianchi che invano si sarebbe sforzata di strappare, delle rughe che ben presto le avrebbero devastato il volto? Sembra già di sentire gli stessi accenti dell’ultima produzione lirica di Orazio, in particolare quelli di Carm. 4,11 e 4,14.

Günther, Hans-Peter Syndikus zur Dichtung, Detlef Liebs zum Recht, John Scheid zur Religion, Alessandro Stavru zur bildenden Kunst. Giordano Bruno (1548-1600) is famous for being a heretic and for endorsing the Copernican system of the planets. This book identifies his place in the Aristotelian tradition. Occasionally, Bruno taught Aristotle at universities, and great part of his philosophy is engaging in interpreting and correcting Aristotle. In discussing the history of philosophical theories Bruno showed that the thorough study of the history of philosophy generates philosophy. Paul Richard Blum is T.J. Higgins, S.J., Chair in Philosophy at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore, USA. He studied philosophy in Germany and Italy and taught in Germany, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. Besides Renaissance philosophy he specializes in early modern scholasticism.

Arcangela Cafagna è dottore di ricerca in Filologia greca e latina presso l’Università di Bari. Si occupa di poesia augustea e di frammenti di poeti neoterici. Frutto di una tradizione tarda e ampiamente corrotta, il testo delle elegie di Properzio continua a offrire materia di vivace dibattito ai contrapposti orientamenti di critica testuale. Nel presente lavoro si analizzano i più significativi punti controversi del I libro.

Juan Pedro Monferrer-Sala (Ph.D. 1996, University of Granada) is currently a Full Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Cordoba. His research focuses on Christian Arabic literature in the Near East and in al-Andalus. This volume offers a synthetic vision of the religious literary production of the Arabized Christians of al-Andalus, known as Mozarabs, together with a bibliographical selection on the Mozarabic universe.

Catullus is one of the most popular of Classical Latin authors because he offers poems easily presented to a beginners’ class: not weighty and serious but short and humorous. But this is not the whole truth. He is also deeply committed to the Roman Republic, its traditions, the disaster of Pompey’s defeat and Caesar’s triumph, the decay of public morality. This is what Newman already emphasised in his Roman Catullus and the Modification of the Alexandrian Sensibility (Weidman, Hildesheim 1990, Pp. 483) and tries again to emphasise for the more general reader here. John Kevin Newman, born in 1928, made his first acquaintance with Classical scholarship at Oxford in 1946-52, where Eduard Fraenkel and Rudolf Pfeiffer were still lecturing. After teaching for the Benedictines at Downside Abbey for some years, in 1969 he accepted a professorship at the University of Illinois, from which he has now retired. He has published eight books and over a hundred articles on Classical themes.

This book offers a concise, yet comprehensive companion volume to Tibullus and the Corpus Tibullianum by Kevin Newman, Robert Maltby and Peter Knox. Hans-Christian Günther is Professor of Classics at the University of Freiburg. He has published extensively on Augustan Poetry (i.a. Brill's Companion to Propertius and Brill's Companion to Horace), ancient and modern Greek poetry and philosophy. He is also the author of numerous verse translations from Latin, Italian, Modern, Greek, Georgian, Japanese and Chinese.

This is a collection of essays on various aspects of Giordano Bruno’s philosophy. After a general introduction into his thought, his Spaccio de la bestia trionfante is most prominent. Bruno’s style and language, and his views on languages are a recurrent topic on these pages. For him, Truth itself is transcendent and unattainable in its fullness. Therefore, all knowledge “around” it is a construct that requires to be embodied and expressed in a certain medium, a language, mathematics being just one among many possible and suitable choices. Elisabeth Blum teaches philosophy at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore. Among other publications, she translated Bruno's Spaccio into German.

Jacques Bénigne Bossuet (1627-1704) provides the historical context of philosophers like Descartes who appear to be timeless. He exposed the political philosophy, the epistemology, the philosophy of history and the theology of his time against the prejudice that thinkers have to be solipsistic. Bossuet reconciled rationality and Biblical authority when the Enlightenment threatened to divorce them. This is true for his political philosophy and for his philosophical psychology. Knowing worldly power helps fathom the divine order, and knowing the human intellect fosters philosophical piety towards God. Paul Richard Blum is T.J. Gasparo Contarini was the first to write a critique of the treatise On the Immortality of the Soul by his teacher Pietro Pomponazzi. The future Cardinal claims that the human soul can be perfected during life with the body and that it is philosophically sound – and not only an article of faith – that the soul is immortal. Gasparo Contarini (1483-1542) was a member of a patrician family in Venice. He studied in Padua, among others with Pietro Pomponazzi, before engaging in the duties of a diplomat for his city. Due to his merits in negotiating with the Protestants he was created Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. In his scarce leisure time he kept writing philosophical and scientific studies. The editors are a group of scholars connected with Palacký University in Olomouc (Czech Republic).

A: The brief description of the contents of the book : The collection of papers assesses the impact of the reception of Averroist ideas on philosophy between the 15th and 17th century in the Latin West. Most of the articles in the volume were presented at the conference “Averroism between the 15th and 17th century,” which was held on 9th –10th November, 2016 by the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts at Palacký University, Olomouc, the Czech Republic. The contributors explore the influence of Averroes, identify the difficulties in the interpretation of his works, and study his followers and critics in the Latin, Hebrew, and Byzantine traditions. B: a brief self introduction of you as editor: Jozef Matula teaches Medieval and Renaissance philosophy at Palacký University in Olomouc, the Czech Republic. His research focuses especially on epistemology and psychology in Late Medieval Latin and Byzantine Philosophy (Thomas Aquinas, Plethon, Bessarion) as well as on Renaissance philosophy (Marsilio Ficino, Leone Ebreo, Agostino Nifo) and history of tolerance (12th-17th century).
