UNIT 4 SPORT IN THE UK

A02 Compare the structure and functions of two governing bodies of sport

England rugby England lacrosse

Structure National
Differences

Similarities

Rugby is very popular all around the country, and has high participation amounts, but lacrosse is very popular in specific areas, for example Manchester who have the most club in the united kingdon.

Both body's have ceos, lacrosse's is called David Shuttleworth and the rfu is Ian Ritchie , they both dictate to the different committees who then tell the local clubs . Both elite athletes in England have league of which the highest level of there sport is played.

Structure Regional

Both lacrosse and rugby have regional officers running there regions , meaning that in that way they do the same job. There job is to improve county performance play and to encourage clubs to grow in size and get more players

Similarities

Differences
The sizes of areas that each development officer to cover is a great difference , rugby officers have to cover one region like Somerset, and in very popular places there are two officers , but on the other hand when lacrosse officers have to cover a area like the whole south west There are 390 clubs in the south west on England for rugby.

Structure Local
Similarities
Locally rugby and lacrosse club

captains work together with local officers and schools to help gain support and get more people interested in the sports for example will Finlayson go into culverhay school and teaches the sixth form students for lacrosse.

Differences
The difference between the

rugby locally and lacrosse is the amount of clubs that are based in a small place , for example there are around 15 rugby clubs in bath where there is only 1 lacrosse club in bath.

Whole Sport Plan

Start, Stay, Succeed is lacrosse's whole sport plans tag line while the RFUs grow, sustain and excel.

Similarities
The similarities between these tag lines are that in the future they are both looking make the quality the national teams better . Both sports different variations of the sports available to people who like the sport but maybe not the violent side of it ,for example there is touch rugby and pop lacrosse .

Differences

The difference between there whole sport plans are that the RFU already has high participation levels , and the England lacrosse does not have as many people playing it , so they look to create more participation.

Rule Making
Similarities

The RFU and lacrosse are similarities way that they both have main bodies that suggest rule changes and there is a group of leader bellow this that vote and or disuses the proposed rule changes. Also the rules between the different ages of rugby change for safety reasons for example you are not allowed to lift in the line-out until you aren't U17 Level and young lacrosse players are introduced with poplacrosse.

Differences lacrosse contain 3 referees compared to rugby's one this shows the dangerousness of the sport and the precautions that are needed to keep players safe.

General Notes the RFU chief executive mark Mcaffery works with the senior rugby union figures to disuses the proposed rules changes.

Merchandising

Similarities Moth sports have mandatory kits for example shorts jerseys socks and appropriate footwear. Also gum shields have to be worn for safety.

Differences The full lacrosse kits cost a very around 200 pounds plus , this amount is much more then the rugby kit costs, this could be the reason for less people playing the sport.

General Notes Due to the tax put onto items sent in from abroad a full kit for lacrosse will cost you considerably more. Meaning that manufacturers are reluctant sell there items in other country's especially when the sport is not a professional sport in the UK.

Competitions and Tournaments

Differences The difference between proffesional Rugby and lacrosse would be that the lacrosse works out its leagues in a south and north leagues while rugby has 1 premiership which is not slipup into north and south leagues.

Similarities Both professional players for each sport get paid to play.

General Notes the RFU offer six knockout type tournaments called: The Anglo Welsh Cup, The British & Irish Cup, The League Champions Cups , RFU Intermediate Cup ,RFU Senior Vase, RFU Junior Vase The RFU has a set budget for the delivery of these competitions. Details of which will be delivered to the relevant participants as appropriate.

Training of Officials
Similarities

A similarities that I noticed for rugby and lacrosse are that they offer training of officials at young ages. Rugby gives children of 16 years of age or over to take a rugby ready course which teaches them the basics of coaching rugby and allows for a further pathway in rugby coaching. And lacrosse offers a course for officials at the age of 14 to be able to have the skills to teach pop-lacrosse and or practical lacrosse. This course cost 20 pounds and is an easy way for young officials to gain access to lacrosse.

Differences the lacrosse workforce look at making a bigger officiating workforce, while the RFU look at making there work force feel more appreciated and well supported
