Types of Cutting Tools

Objective
To study some important types of cutting tools

Cutting tool may be

Single point
Example : Turning ,Shaping ,Boring etc. Multiple point Examples: milling cutters, Grinding wheels Drills etc.

Single point cutting tools

A cutting tool that uses a single cutting edge to remove material.

Turning
This operation is one of the most basic machining processes. That is, the part is rotated while a single point cutting tool is moved parallel to the axis of rotation. Turning can be done on the external surface of the part as well as internally (boring). The starting material is generally a workpiece generated by other processes such as casting, forging, extrusion, or drawing. Rough turning The rough turning is a process of removal of excess material from work piece in minimum time by applying high rate of feed and heavy depth of cut. Finish turning The operation of machining a surface to accurate size and producing a smooth finish.

Boring
Enlarging or smoothing an existing hole created by drilling, moulding etc.

Parting
This process is used to create deep grooves which will remove a completed or part-complete component from its parent stock.

Grooving

is like parting, except that grooves are cut to a specific depth by a form tool instead of severing a completed/part-complete component from the stock. Grooving can be performed on internal and external surfaces, as well as on the face of the part (face grooving or trepanning).

Multipoint cutting tool

A cutting tool that has two or more cutting edges

Drilling
Drilling is used to remove material from the inside of a workpiece. This process utilizes standard drill bits held stationary in the tail stock or tool turret of the lathe

Knurling
Knurling operation produces depression or indentation of various shapes into the work piece by use of revolving hardened steel wheels pressed against work piece.

Milling
Milling is a process of removing metal by feeding a work past a rotating multicutter.

Types of milling

Plain Milling
A cylindrical milling cutter with teeth on the periphery only; used for milling plain or flat surfaces. Also known as slab cutter.

Face milling

A milling operation in which the surface of the workpiece is perpendicular to the spindle axis

Form Milling

A milling process that uses a mill with a unique shape that is imparted to a workpiece

Gang Milling

a composite milling cutter made up of several cutters set in the same arbor in such relation as to give a cut having some desired profile

Grinding
Grinding is a machining process of abrading the jab surface material by means of a rotating abrasive wheel to provide high dimensional accuracy and fine surface finish.

External Cylindrical Grinding

A common grinding process that holds a cylindrical part on each end and rotates the part as a rotating grinding wheel is guided along its length.

Centerless grinding

A type of grinding in which cylindrical parts are not held between centers but are supported on a work rest and rotated.
