The alarm clock woke me up. I hurried to the bathroom and took a bath. I made sure that I cleaned my body well. After a refreshing bath, I wore my very clean uniform. When I was done fixing myself, I went down and smelled the aroma of crisp bacon. I hurried to the dining room to eat breakfast. At school, everybody was outside the classroom for the flag ceremony. After the flag ceremony, the principal talked about keeping ourselves and our surroundings clean. She said that we should throw our garbage in appropriate trash cans and learn to use the toilets properly. She reminded us that cleanliness is next to godliness.

words are preceded by the and a. the and a are called noun markers or articles. They signal nouns. The, a, and an are the most commonly used noun markers.
In the sentences where the words run and light are used as noun, notice that the
A and an are called indefinite noun markers because they refer to anything, anyone, anywhere. They are used only with singular count nouns.
a is used before a word that starts with a consonant while an is used before a word
The, on the other hand, is called a definite noun marker because it refers to a specific person, place, or thing. It is used with nouns that are clearly identified.
EXAMPLES
All men are mortal. Cars can be rented at almost any airport. Both girls are pretty. Each person is mortal. Take as many apples as you like. We have no more bananas. No eggs left and no money to buy any. Several people were injured in the accident. Some roses were still blooming. We have to cross this river here in order to reach that mountain over there. These people over here and those people over there are all Southerners, the rest are from elsewhere. That coat you are wearing looks warmer than this one I have on. Those boxes out there are to be given away; these boxes in here are coming with us. We spent what money we did have. That is the boat which I thought would never sail. I suspect an elephant was here.
