Aim of this Presentation

To help you understand the different types of memory & how they work

Where it is located in your brain

What affects memory Its importance and value to your job How you can improve it

Types of Memory & How They Work

Explicit Conscious mind
Cognitive processing Facts Mind Verbal/semantic - Language Description of operations Description of procedures Stories Implicit Unconscious mind Unconscious processing Emotional Conditioning Body Sensory Automatic skills Automatic procedures

Where is it in Your Brain

Our brains store information in a variety of locations, however the particular types of memory we are looking at today are located deep in our brains and are attached to the brain stem. They are at the core of who we are. The following 2 slides provide visuals to demonstrate this.

Amygdala

Hippocampus

Layout of Our Nervous System

What Affects Memory

Stress Disease Having a busy mind Lack of sleep Alcohol Trauma psychological and physical Body position Bodys response to external stimulus Autonomic Nervous System Limbic System (Emotion) Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) Fight or Flight (Implicit) Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) Promotes relaxation (Explicit) Somatic Nervous System Sensory input : external/internal processing & encoding information

Why It Is Important in Your Life

Observation Skills - What you see, store and are able to recall Pattern recognition Behavioural traits Body language Multi-Tasking Explicit & Implicit Actions Cognitive processing while doing something unconsciously Gut Feeling Limbic & Somatic Systems Seeing something that doesnt feel right and acting on it

What You can Do To Improve Memory

There are various methods currently available to improve memory function: Brain Training Games IQ Tests

Hypnosis & Self Hypnosis

The most effective method we have found through a great deal of research is training the brain to multi-task. This improves what is called Fluid Intelligence by forcing the brain to adapt constantly by stretching its current capabilities to the limit and beyond. This is achieved through identifying patterns in a grid. It begins by working with 1 at a time, once you have reached a certain standard you can then move on to 2 patterns and so on. It is an extremely effective method of improving your cognitive processing & multi-tasking ability across the board. It is however frustrating to begin with and requires patience, commitment and determination. We use this in our Executive & Leadership Development Programmes with great effect. The system we use is available in a free download at: http://brainworkshop.sourceforge.net/
