Final Group Evaluation

In our pre-production planning, we talked about ideas we liked and disliked and came to conclusions about what would be best to use in our opening sequence to a film. We discussed genre and sub-genre films we each enjoyed and this helped in the outcome of planning to create a crime film opening. We thought crime would work best as it could include the sub-genres of action or drama which are hugely popular. We each found many various directors that have directed world-wide and popular films in the crime genre and could gather information from these directors to help with our pre-production planning and eventually our filming and editing. In Katerinas research, she found the director Steven Spielberg who uses flashbacks in films such as Jurassic Park. This gave us an insight into ways in which the flashbacks could be used in films and how we could interpret the flashback into our product. We visited the BBFC website to acknowledge what is acceptable and unacceptable to be exploited in our production and how the use of some things (e.g.- violence, drug use) needs to be subtle in a 12/12A certification. However, the use of these examples could be of a stronger use in a film with a 15 certification. We had to converse about what certification we would like our production to be, and we finally came to a result of it being a 15 certification. With our research, we visited the BBFC website to find out what certificate we should make our film be. Visiting the website allowed us to see what would be allowed to be included in our chosen 15+ production as we did not want to make the film inappropriate for some audiences or too bland for others. As the BBFC website states In a 15 certification; the work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour. Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. We used this knowledge when creating our product with the idea that the topic of drugs would be involved in our production, but this information allowed us to know how far this involvement could go without the risk of having to alter our production to a higher certificate. We devised a spider diagram of titles that could possibly be used for the name of our production, resulting in all our ideas put into consideration for Framed. In our group, we reflected on the fact that dodgy drug deals and crime interrogations are not an everyday occurrence for many teenagers to witness, so this could appeal to the teenage audience. In our director research, Amy found the director Noel Clarke who has directed, starred and written many films; one of these films being 4.3.2.1. In this, the uses of flashbacks are also present and include exploitation of drugs, much like our own film. Katie was able to find research on the director Martin Scorsese who has directed films that often take a section of the film from either the middle or end and starts the film with that. She found this to occur in his films such as: Raging Bull, Casino and Goodfellas. This research helped us out as we to have began our opening sequence from mid way of the film and then include the flashback to take the audience back to how the storyline got to that point in time that was shown in the opening scene. We developed a questionnaire to gain knowledge into other peoples opinions on crime films that they have seen. The outcome of the questionnaire results benefitted with our pre-production as we could recognise what other people and our target audience like and disliked in the crime genre of films and we could work on these things within our production to make it the most appealing it could be.

In a 12/12A certification there should be; No discriminatory language or behaviour must be endorsed. Aggressive discriminatory language or behaviour is unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly condemned. There cannot be any misuse of drugs must be infrequent and should not be glamorised or give instructional detail. Moderate physical and psychological threat may be permitted, provided disturbing sequences are not frequent or sustained. Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied, or appear pain or harm free. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised. Moderate language is allowed. The use of strong language (for example, fuck) must be infrequent. Nudity is allowed, but in a sexual context must be brief and discreet. Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed. Sex references should not go beyond what is suitable for young teenagers. Frequent crude references are unlikely to be acceptable. Mature themes are acceptable, but their treatment must be suitable for young teenagers. Moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory moments may be permitted if justified by the context. Sexual violence may only be implied or briefly and discreetly indicated, and must have a strong contextual justification In a 15 certification; the work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour. Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example, aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable. Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised. Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised. There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, fuck). The strongest terms (for example, cunt) may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable. Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context. Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable. No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds. Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification.

Contingency Plan
In the case of the locations or actors which our group has chosen to use for our AS Media Production are not available, we needed to make a contingency plan for back up purposes so our filming and AS coursework could continue.

Our Chosen Locations

For the interrogation scene which occurs in our opening scene of our sequence, we have chosen to use one of the connexions rooms in our school. These rooms provide and small and secluded yet easily accessible space to film in which is perfect for the confidentiality of the scene. If the connexions room in which we chose was unavailable at the time in which we needed it, we would either book another time (during our lesson if approved or after school) or use a different connexions room. Another location which we were planning to use for our production was Cockfosters High Street. Our particular chosen place to film here was at a bus stop. This was for a scene in which we had planned out for a scene we were going to film with two of our characters. We decided that if this chosen place was unavailable to film at we would use a close by park. After some considering and future planning, we had decided to change this scene we were going to film due to the fact that as a group we believed it gave too much information away for our film as it was only the opening and so therefore altered our decision on filming here. After consideration, and rearranging our script and ideas on our product, we have finally chosen an office that will appear to be one of our characters work place. In the possibility that any location would be unable to be used at the last minute, we needed to have a back up just in case. We booked and checked with the teachers who supplied access to the connexions room in advance so that we could be sure that the room 1 would be free for our use of filming. However in the event that the connexions room 1 was not available, we would have used one of the other connexions rooms supplied or used either an office or classroom available to us. The fact that we checked ahead of our use of the room, that it was available, allowed us to focus on finding other locations when knowing that one was okay to use. If by any chance we needed to change to Cockfosters High street bus stop scene, we had planned out the choice to either use another high street/road or to use our school as a setting for the flashback of the film. This would entitle us to us one of our chosen actors and show the build up to the drug deal that would occur. If the weather was not suitable (for our high street scene) we could have either chosen to wait and film another day, however this could delay filming time and the editing process or we could have chosen to do the scene inside the school. However this was before deciding to alter this scene and so therefore had to check with our teachers whether the office we wished to use for the modified scene was going to be available at the time we hoped to use it and booked it in advance so we could be sure we would be able to use it for our product.

Our Chosen Actors

Choosing appropriate actors for our film was something the group put into consideration. We had to bare in mind that the people who will be in our opening sequence would want to and like to be in it and also gain their consent with a letter of permission in which we wrote detailing what they would be partaking in along with details about it for them to sign. We have three characters in our product and obtained their letters of permission from them signed. A man being framed for a drug deal, the good but harsh interrogator and the dirty cop who is a sly interrogator. If it was to found out that any of the people who we planned to ask to act in our production didnt want to or couldnt, we had to contemplate using other people to act. If any of the individuals chosen to act in our production was under the age of eighteen years old, they would need to have a letter of permission signed by their parent or guardian to authorize their child to partake in it. However our three individuals chosen are all over the age of eighteen, therefore being able to sign the letters themselves. We previously had a person under the age of eighteen going to play a part in our opening sequence however they had to withdraw, resulting in another person adopting their roll, leading to our over eighteen cast. With the fact that at the times we needed to use the filming equipment, another group or class were using or in need of it, we needed to take precautions to make sure we could use the equipment and at the correct and easiest time. We decided to write down the times we would be aiming to film, and this allowed us to find out if our chosen actors would be able to film this day, along with being able to confirm the fact we would be using the chosen equipment on that day. By doing this, it allowed us the time we needed with no delays, to film our 2 minute 30 second piece.
