CONCURRENT ENGINEERING

Higuera Medina Marcoff Corral Moreno Figueroa Salazar Ordoez Torres Uras Vea Gmez

Concurrent engineering
Has as its purpose to detail the design while simultaneously developing production capability, field support capability, and quality. It consists of a methodology using multidisciplined teams to carry out this concurrency.

CE tools in the form of algorithms,

techniques, and software, and the expertise and judgment of people who make up the complete design and production sequence.
The essence of CE is the integration of

product design and process planning into one common activity.

Concurrent design helps improve the quality of early design decisions and has a tremendous impact on life cycle cost of the

product.

Background
Challenges in manufacturing since the seventies: most demanding consumers, rapid technological change, environmental issues, competitive cost and quality, and shorter times for bringing new products commercially available.

Same time the economies have shown:

slow growth, excessive capacity, and global markets

How have faced the changes? Incorporating new technologies to design and
production and CAD / CAM or robotics. However, for these new technologies have required new forms of organization, practices and attitudes.

To compete successfully, companies must:

reduce time to develop their products, while maintaining continuous improvement in the quality of their products.

The concurrent engineering is defined as:

Systematic approach for integrated, concurrent

design of products and their related processes, including the manufacture and support.
This approach is intended to cause the developer,

from the outset, to consider all elements of the product life cycle from concept to disposal, including quality, cost, schedule and user requirements.

The definition suggests that this philosophy requires the integration of teams from the start of product development The team should include individuals of all life cycle phases of a project: designers, manufacturing personnel, Marketing, maintenance sales etc ...

The design of a product is supported

by computer systems (CAD / CAM) that to model solids provide an opportunity to integrate design, planning and production.
The creation of a product requires hundreds or thousands of drawings. Information

specifications, software, manufacturing, assembly, and maintenance requirements mustbe managed in an integrated manner.

Other elements that support concurrent engineering are some formal techniques that are listed in the table:

Quality Function Deployment (QFD), Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Method de Taguchi, Finite Method Element Analysis (FMEA), Statistical Process Control (SPC), Design Structure Matrix (DSM), Design Evalaution Display (DED).

Benefits of Concurrent Engineering

Reduces time from design concept to market launch by 25% or more Reduces Capital investment by 20% or more Supports total quality from the start of production with earlier opportunities for

continuous improvement Simplifies after-sales service Assembly in the Context of Product Development Simplifies after-sales service Increases product life-cycle profitability throughout the supply system

How to apply the philosophy of Concurrent Engineering to design-build projects?

In the process of selecting design-build competitive relationship between the participants during the procurement is a transfer of documents and meetings for clarification. Under this scheme can not integrate a work team members organization of the owner and designer builder.
It is therefore necessary that both implement a concurrent engineering philosophy from their respective shares.

How it Works

3 Main Areas to Concurrent Engineering

1) People 2) Process 3) Technology

How It Works
Area 1: People

-Formation of teams -Training

Area 2: Process

-Changes in your processes -Be open to change

How It Works
Area 3: Technology

-CAD/CAM -Software. Hardware, and Networking

Basic Summary

-Most important aspect is People -Process and Technology: Dont be afraid of change
