What is SSR?
Solid State Relay is defined as A relay with isolated input and output, whose functions are achieved by means of electronic components without the use of moving parts. Solid State Relays unlike EMRs make use of Solid State electronics for the purpose of switching the load.

Reed-Relay-Coupled SSR's:
in which the control signal is applied (directly, or through a preamplifier) to the coil of a reed relay. The closure of the reed switch then activates appropriate circuitry that triggers the thyristor switch.

Transformer-Coupled SSR's:
in which the control signal is applied (through a DC-AC converter, if it is DC, or directly, if It is AC) to the primary of a small, low-power transformer, and the secondary voltage that results from the primary excitation is used (with or without rectification, amplification, or other modification) to trigger the thyristor switch.

Photo-coupled SSR's
in which the control signal is applied to a light or infrared source (usually, a light-emitting diode, or LED), and the radiation from that source is detected in a photosensitive semi-conductor (i.e., a photosensitive diode, a photo-sensitive transistor, or a photo-sensitive thyristor). The output of the photo-sensitive device is then used to trigger (gate) the TRIAC or the SCR's that switch the load current.

Input Circuit: The input of an SSR may consist of a simple resistor in series with an optical-isolator, or of a more complex circuit with current regulation, reverse polarity protection, EMC filtering, etc. In either case, they both serve the same basic function, which is to sense the application of a control signal and to tell the SSR that it must turn on. Optical Isolation: The optical isolator in an SSR provides isolation between the input circuitry / control system, and the output circuit connected to the AC mains. The type of optical isolator used in the relay may also determine whether it is a zero-crossing or randomfire output. Trigger Circuit: This processes the input signal and switches the output state of the SSR. The trigger circuit may be internal or external to the optical-isolator

Switching Circuit: This is the portion of the SSR that switches the power to the load. It usually consists of a transistor, SCR, or FET in a DC application, or a triac, alternistor, or back-to-back SCR in an AC application Protection Circuit: Many applications require some form of electrical protection to prevent the SSR from being damaged in the application, or from miss-firing due to environmental conditions. The protective device(s) may be incorporated into the design of an SSR, or mounted external to the relay.

Switching by Solid State Electronics. No moving parts, hence no wear and tear mechanical. Compatible to TTL / Cmos logic Switching can be controlled. No EMI/RFI problems Fast switching

Switchingby metal contact. Moving parts. Hence wear and tear. Requires more power to switch. Switching cannot be controlled. Contact bouncing and arcing. Leads to EMI/RFI problems. Slow response.

It consists of several steps: MOLDING STAMPING ASSEMBLY QUALITY MANAGEMENT LINE DESIGN AND PRODUCTION TESTING

Always select the SSR whose current rating exceeds the nominal load current. Verify load current with respect to ambient temperature ( refer the curves ). SSR should be provided with an external heatsink for IL > 3 Amps. Apply the heatsink compound between SSR base and Heatsink. Always protect the output of the SSR against voltage transients and load shorts by using appropriate devices. Eg: Fuses.

Make use of MOVs ( metal oxide variastors ) for voltage transients and semiconductor fuses for short circuit. Use RC network ( snubber ) to improve dv/dt and for current transient. HEATER LOADS Select the SSR Current rating @ 1.5 times of the heater rated steady current. INDUCTOR LOADS Select the SSR Current ratings @ 5 times of the inductive loads like Motors,Transformers steady state current.

SSRs are used to switch the Heaters, Lamps, Motors, Solenoids, Transformer and Capacitor as encounterd in application such as.: 1. Industrial Process Control Systems. 2. Machine Tool Control 3. Building Automation 4. Vending Machines 5. Appliances 6. Dispersing Equipment 7. Medical Equipment

8. Traffic control systems 9. Furnace and Oven Control System 10. Temperature Control System 11. DCS & SCADA application. 12. Wind mill ( Capacitor bank switching ) 13. Packaging Equipment
