Conditional Sentence Type III


Meaning of the if clause : untrue in

the past (past unreal)


Verb form in the if clause : past

perfect tense
Verb form in the result clause : past

future perfect tense


Fact : past tense

Conditional Sentence Type III


If (past perfect tense), (past future perfect tense)

OR
(past future perfect tense) if (past perfect tense)

Past Perfect Tense


1. Nominal Form

S + had + been + Complement


Example : 1. The weather had been nice yesterday 2. My uncle had been in the army for twenty years in 1990 3. My friend had been at my home for five hours

Past Perfect Tense


2. Verbal Form

S + had + verb III + O / Adverb


Example : 1. They had lived in that house for ten years last year 2. I had slipped on the ice yesterday 3. I had forgotten to invite them last Sunday

Past Future Perfect Tense


1.Nominal Form

S + would / should + have + been + complement


Example : 1. My father would have been at home for three hours 2. We should have been here hours ago 3. Anita would have been in the kitchen since 5 oclock

Past Future Perfect Tense


2.Verbal Form

S + would / should + have + verb III + O / Adverb


Example : 1. I should have finished the task yesterday 2. We should have visited grandma last Monday 3. He would have built the house by July last year

Conditional Sentence Type III :


Example : 1. If we had composed that novel, they would have respected us fact : we didnt composed that novel so they didnt respect us 2. They would have come here if he hadnt forgotten to invite them last Sunday fact : he forgot to invite them last Sunday so they didnt come here

Conditional Sentence Type III :


Example : 3. If she had told me about her problem, I would have helped her fact : she didnt told me about her problem so I didnt help her 4. I would have changed the present economic policy if I had been the President of United States fact : I werent the President of United States so I didnt change the present economic policy

Conditional Sentence Type III :


Exercise : 1. If I (have) money, I would have treated you answer : If I had had money, I would have treated you
2. If I (slip , not) on the ice, I (break , not) my arm answer : If I hadnt slipped on the ice, I wouldnt have broken my arm

Conditional Sentence Type III :


Example : 3. Fred failed the test because he didnt study. However, if he (study) for the test, he (pass) it. answer : If he had studied for the test, he would have passed it
4. Linda wasnt at home yesterday. If she (be) at home yesterday, I (visit) her. answer : If she had been at home yesterday, I would have visited her
