LANDSCAPE DESIGN FOR SMALL HOUSE
GROUND COVER
Applied to small plants (less than 18 inches tall) which cover the ground in place of turf
Plants that are smaller in size than trees and usually multi-stemmed. Shrubs are most commonly used as a wall element in the outdoor room
SHRUB
PALM
Monocotyledons and have only one seed leaf All sword trees have a few very big leaves formed one at a time at stem from a lot of material and the leaf base is board and encircles the stem
TREE
A tree may provide full or partial shade, while creating a feeling of intimacy or openness
CLIMBERS
Climbing plants do not have self-support trunks or branches and they various modifications to lift themselves up towards the sunlight.
EXAMPLES
1. GROUND COVER a) Bougainvillaea b) Hedera helix 2. TREE a) Mesua ferrea b) Khaya Senegalensis c) Filicium dicipens d) Plumeria rubra 3. PALM a) Roystonea negia

Generally all trees over about 1.5m high require staking initially. The staking of smaller plants may be considered on exposed sites. The long stakes for larger trees are approximately 2.8m long, with a butt diameter of 75-100mm, driven 1.0m into the ground. They should be offset in position from centre of the pit, on the windward side. Wire guying, secured above or below ground is an alternative means of supporting large trees. Semi-mature trees can be anchored with underground guys, strapped over their rootball and fixed to sleepers below ground.
STACKING
Staking is a stake that is used to support the plant from physical damage due to wind disturbance
Single staking
Multiple-stick staking
