Bluetooth was officially introduced by telecoms vendor Ericsson in 1994 and its intended basic purpose was to be a wire

replacement technology in order to rapidly transfer voice and data.

The word Bluetooth is an anglicised version of the Scandinavian Bltand/Bltann, the epithet of the tenth-century king Haral I of Denmark and parts of Norway who united dissonant Danish tribes into a single kingdom. The implication is that Bluetooth does the same with communications protocols, uniting them into one universal standard.

Bluetooth technology eliminates the need for numerous and inconvenient cable attachment.
This technology enables user to automatically and easily connect a wide range of computing and telecommunication devices. Bluetooth make wireless communication and network between devices in a small localized area. Bluetooth is actually a standard for wireless communication between devices within a range of 10 meters.

Bluetooth is a high-speed, low-power microwave wireless link technology, designed to connect phones, laptop, PDAs and other portable equipment together. Unlike infra-red, Bluetooth does not require and line-of-sight positioning of connected devices like infra-red. Two Bluetooth products can exchange their addresses and capabilities just after coming within the range of about 10 meters.

Connections can be point-to-point or multipoint. The maximum range is 10 meters but can be extended 100 meters by increasing the power. Bluetooth devices are protected from radio interference by changing their frequencies arbitrarily up to a maximum of 1600 times a second, a technique know as frequency hopping.
Piconet is the important factor in Bluetooth connectivity. It is simply a collection of devices connected through Bluetooth technology.
