How Old Are You?

Teacher Notes

Introduce the question Quel ge as-tu? (How old are you?) Click on the arrow or words to listen to this. Ask children to suggest the meaning of the question then ask them to say how old the character pictured is to elicit the reply cinq.

Teacher Notes

Click on cinq to hear this then click on the character to hear him say Jai cinq ans (Im five years old). Ask children to work out what this means.

Teacher Notes

Ask the question to the class and they chorus the reply Jai cinq ans. Repeat this with the other characters over the next set of slides.

Teacher Notes

Put children into groups of six. Give the first child in a group a card with the question Quel ge as-tu? on. They have to respond with Jai cinq ans (or some children may respond by giving the number only) and then they pass the card on to the next child who responds with Jai six ans and so on.

Teacher Notes

Now ask children to practise a question-andanswer dialogue in pairs. After they have practised, ask if any pair would like to perform their dialogue for the class. Remind the class that they can use Et toi? to ask a question back to someone. Write this on the board.

Teacher Notes

Children will now practise how to say other peoples ages. Click on the character to hear him say his age then ask about him Quel ge a Pascal? See if the class can work out what this means. Click on the speech bubble to listen to this.

Teacher Notes

Click on A and B to listen to the two possible answers Il a cinq ans (He is five years old) and Il a sept ans (He is seven years old). Ask children to work out what these mean and then ask them which is the correct answer. Click the mouse button to see.

Teacher Notes

Say to the class that you are now talking about a female character so you would say Elle a . . . ans (She is . . . years old). Repeat the same process as with the previous slide then do the same for the next set of slides.

Teacher Notes

Ask individual children Quel ge as-tu? and after they have given an answer, ask other children about that child Quel ge a ? and see if they can work out an answer using this slide as a visual aid. You could ask children to write some of the answers on the board.
