USMMA DEFENSE
We will employ an odd front as our base defense. Built into our 50 scheme will be complimentary fronts, line stunts and a multiple blitz package. We will also have the ability to play 4-3, 4-4, 6-1, 4-6, 3-3 and Nickel fronts within our defensive package.
I. Huddle A. Alignment 1. The entire defense will face the sideline. 2. The Nose will set the huddle 1 yard from the ball. 3. The DTs and OLBs will align according to the side of the ball they play on. 4. The Mike will call the signals and the Dime will align in the front row. 5. The FS will also call signals. The Anchor will always align in the back row, behind the LB. 6. The CBs will align according to the side of the ball they play on and will be at the end of the huddle. 7. B. Huddle Procedure 1. The Nose will set the huddle and call Huddle. 2. Once the defense hears Huddle there should be silence and all of the players should see our sideline as the huddle is formed 3. The Anchor will give the Down & Distance. 4. The Mike will give the front and the stunt (e.g. Okie Drive Tight). 5. The FS will give the coverage (e.g. 6-5) 6. The FS will say Ready and the team responds with Hit as they clap and break the huddle. C. Calling Line Stunts / Complimentary Alignments 1. Stunts and complimentary alignments may be called in the huddle in 2 ways: a) The Mike may predetermine the side of the stunt by saying To, meaning the side of strength or Away, meaning the side away from strength. b) The Mike may say Tight, in the huddle. This means that the Mike will give direction at the LOS.
II. At the Line Procedure A. Declaring Strength 1. The Anchor will declare strength with either an Anchor right or Anchor left call. 2. When the ball is on the hash, the Anchor will align to the field. 3. If a Special call is given in the huddle, the Anchor will align to the boundary if the formation dictates. 4. In the MOF, the Anchor will align to the side dictated by the formation strength. The most dangerous passing threat dictates formation strength. B. Coverage Calls 1. The FS will call adjusted coverages after the offensive set is recognized. a) The other DBs, OLBs & LBs will repeat the FS call. C. Tight Call 1. Mike will always make a Tight Call. (Tight Left or Tight Right) 2. When Tight is used in conjunction with a frontage stunt or a comp alignment, the Mike must give the front direction at the LOS. 3. According to the opponents formation, a Gee or Haw call will be given. a) Gee moves the front right. b) Haw moves the front left. D. OLB-DT Communication 1. The OLBs will make a You or Me call to the DTs. a) Me signifies the OLB will be on the LOS (Press). b) You signifies the OLB will be off in coverage. c) The You Me call will tell the DT if he is a contain pass rusher. E. Stem / Random 1. The front will stem on the command of Move given by the Mike. a) When two fronts are called (e.g. Okie Move Even), the Mike will stem the defense by calling Move. 2. When one front and/or stunt is called in the huddle, it is a Random situation for the entire defense. a) The Nose will call Ronnie for right, telling the front to align to the right of its final alignment. b) The Nose will call Louie for left, telling the front to align to the left of its final alignment. c) The Nose will call Deuce for a double eagle alignment. d) The LINEBACKERS and SECONDARY will based on their rules. 3. If a Now call is given in the huddle, the defense will align in the defense called and nobody will stem.

DELAY: Area from LOS to 5 yds in depth extending across the entire width of the field. HOOK: Area from the LOS to 12 yds in depth extending from TE to TE. CURL: Area from LOS to 12 yds in depth extending from TE to 5 yds outside the hash.

HOLE: Area encompassing the Hook area, but extending to a depth of 20 yards. FADE: Area between 12 and 20 yds deep extending out on an angle from the #s to the sideline. 1/4: Area from 12 yds to the end line dividing the field equally into 4 parts. 1/3: Area from 12 yds to the end line divided equally by the hash marks. 1/2: Area from 12 yds to the end line dividing the field equally from the MOF to the sideline.

1. The first priority is to eliminate the run. The structure of the defense is to force the pass. Due to reduced field space and maximum pressure, the pass should be defended with equal intensity. According to field position and obvious fake situations, we will use Punt Safe. If the ball is kicked, we will employ a holdup return.
ASSIGNMENTS
Sam & Will: Make sure the punter kicks the ball on time. After the ball is kicked, you are responsible for blocking the safeties. You have pitch in option. *If there are two eligible receivers to your side: You have # 2 Man to Man. Give an Off call to the DT. Align on OT in a 4 technique. Block and control OT, do not let him release. See through the OT into the backfield, watching for a fake. *If DE gives you an Off call: Move to a 5 technique and push up field for contain. Make sure the ball is kicked. Align head up on up back or in 2 technique if no up back. Block and control up back (Guard if no up back): Do not let him release. See through him into the backfield. All defenders must insure the ball is kicked. Once the ball is kicked, we will run an automatic wall Return. The return will always be run to the right. OLBs & DTs: Defenders making sure the ball is kicked: Press the punter and make sure the ball is kicked. Once the ball is kicked, get back to end of wall and look to block safeties. Right DT: Man inside defender pressing punter: Peel to the right and locate the punter. Get back and set the wall 10 yards outside the return man and 5 yards up field. Block the first man that shows, pinning man to inside.

Some of our opponents may employ a Muddle Huddle Formation in Field Goal and/or PAT situations. We will align to prevent the possibility of a fake. Nose & DTs: DTs will align one man in from OLBs. Nose will align off of DTs. All three will play basic read off the man they are aligned on. Weak DT must contain the football to his side. Linebackers: Bracket the ball. LBs are responsible for the QB. Pressure the ball under control. Vs. option: QB Sam will align on second man in on LOS. Will will align on TE or # 2 vs. a Twins/Slot formation.
