EXTERNAL MICROMETER

Carbide-tipped measuring faces. Scale division 0,01 mm / 0.0001 in. Setting standard for sizes over 25 mm/1 in. Ratchet friction thimble and locking nut.

APPLICATION

The micrometer is a precision measuring instrument, used by engineers. Each revolution of the rachet moves the spindle face 0.5mm towards the anvil face. The object to be measured is placed between the anvil face and the spindle face. The rachet is turned clockwise until the object is trapped between these two surfaces and the rachet makes a clicking noise. This means that the rachet cannot be tightened any more and the measurement can be read.

Accuracy

The accuracy of a micrometer is derived from several fundamental factors. The most significant factors are: 1) thread accuracy, 2) flatness of measuring faces, 3) parallelism between the faces and 4) rigidity of the frame which holds anvil and spindle.

SOURCES OF ERROR

when using a micrometer its supplied with a ratchet mechanism to regulate the pressure applied this does not always work properly so it is necessary to developed a feel for the correct pressure to apply it is also needed to regularly calibrate the micro to known gauge this in a temperature controlled environment. when used the component should be the same temperature as the measuring instrument. care should be taken to

READING SCALE

Some micrometers are provided with a vernier scale on the sleeve in addition to the regular graduations. These permit measurements within 0.001 millimetre to be made on metric micrometers, or 0.0001inches on inch-system micrometers. For example, a measurement of 5.783 millimetres would be obtained by reading 5.5 millimetres on the sleeve. adding 0.28 millimetre as
