Georgia OKeeffe

Biography
November 15th 1887- March 6th 1986 Born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Oldest of five girls in a family of seven children. Started school at the age of five, and started private art lessons at the age of 11. Attended Madison High School. Moved to Williamsburg, Virginia in 1903.

Art Studies
Graduated from Chatham Episcopal Institute in 1905. Art Institute in Chicago (1905-1906) Art Students League of New York (1907-1908) University of Virginia (1912) Columbia Universitys Teachers College, New York (1914-1916) Taught at various schools and colleges in Virginia, Texas and South Carolina (1911-1918)

Inspiration
Main inspiration was her surroundings.
Teaching: painted the buildings of the Universities. Travelling: painted the buildings, and landscapes.

Alfred Sieglitz
He was impressed with her work that a friend a sent him, and he put the artwork on display in his art gallery 291. He later convinced her to return to New York, where the exhibitions continued and they fell in love. They married in December, 1924. They were together for 22 years, until Alfred died in July, 1946.

After the death of her husband, she bought a house in New Mexico, and then spent the next 30 years travelling around the world As she travelled, she gain more inspiration for paintings, which led to a variety of themes in her paintings. Visiting New Mexico was the inspiration for the animal bone portraits.

Many of her ideas never got past the sketch stage, which means the amount of sketches far outweigh the amount of paintings. She owned over of her collection when she died, because there were a lot of sketches.

Later Life
Stopped painting in 1972, due to loss of her vision. Took up pottery as an alternative.
Not known for her pottery.

Received the Gold Medal of Painting by the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977. Retired in 1984. Received the National Medal of Arts in 1985. Moved back to Santa Fe in her late 90s. Died on March 6th, 1986 at the age of 98.

There are 2,029 known works of hers. Works are currently included in over 100 public exhibits, around the world. The art has been exhibited hundreds of times, both in solo and group exhibitions.
