INTRODUCTION
A smart card is a credit-card sized plastic card embedded with an integrated circuit chip that makes it "smart". This marriage between a convenient plastic card and a microprocessor allows an immense amount of information to be stored, accessed and processed either online or offline. Smart cards can store several hundred times more data than a conventional card with a magnetic stripe. The information or application stored in the IC chip is transferred through an electronic module that interconnects with a terminal or a card reader
have processing power. They have larger storage capacity when compared to magnetic swipe card. The data stored can be protected against unauthorized access and tampering. They are appropriate for secure and convenient data storage. Smart card have property of multifunctionlity.
The contact smart card consists of small contact plate on the face, which is 1/2" in diameter. The transmission of data takes place when this contact plate comes in contact with the connector of the reader. This card consist of an IC Chip and an antenna coil embedded into it. These cards are mainly used when transaction must be processed quickly.
METHODOLOGY
FABRICATION OF SMART CARDS
The reader driver passes all IOCTL requests to the SmartcardDeviceControl driver library routine. If the parameters that the reader driver passes to SmartcardDeviceControl are incorrect, SmartcardDeviceControl returns with an error message. SmartcardDeviceControl returns without completing the IOCTL request. In this situation, the reader driver must complete the IOCTL request. If the parameters are valid, SmartcardDeviceControl processes the IOCTL request if it can. SmartcardDeviceControl checks whether the reader driver has a callback routine defined for the IOCTL request that it is processing. If the callback exists, SmartcardDeviceControl calls it. The callback routine calls all the driver library routines that are required to complete the processing of the IOCTL request. After processing the IOCTL request, the callback routine returns to SmartcardDeviceControl. SmartcardDeviceControl completes the IRP that carried the IOCTL. SmartcardDeviceControl returns control to the reader-driver dispatch routine. The smart card library synchronizes access to the reader driver. No two callback functions will be called at the same time. However, the event handling for card insertion and removal must be processed asynchronously.
Insurance card or Medical File Access card. In Transport Services: For urban parking, airline application and electronic toll collection. In Telecommunication: The smart card contain the phone numbers on the network, billing information and call numbers. Used as identification cards.
ADVANTAGES:
A chip is tamper resistance.
DISADVANTAGES:
It gives a liability issue if stolen or lost. It is potential area for computer hacker and computer viruses. Cost and Availability
FUTURE SCOPE:
Smart Card readers can be built into future computers or
peripherals which will enable the user to pay for goods purchased on the internet. In the near future the multifunctional smart card will replace the traditional magnetic swipe cards.
