Linking HR and CSR helps achieve organizational sustainability

A sustainable organization succeeds by renewing and replenishing its human and social capital. Doing this requires closing the gap between rhetoric and practice regarding corporate social responsibility (CSR). One step toward closing the rhetoric-practice gap is to unite HR and CSR.

Strengthening the HR-CSR link requires a transparent, values-based corporate philosophy that is applied rigorously in by all employees in all their working relationships, inside and outside the organization. At the heart of sustainable success is the integrity with which board members, managers and employees apply the organizations core values in all decisions and actions. Consistency in this regard expands the possibilities for positively shaping the future of the organization and society.

The role of HR

Workshops to engage with staff and promote the exchange of real life experiences. Develop interactive intranet sites that show case examples of good practice, or build in opportunities for promotion of good practice at staff meetings. Review company policy and procedures to ensure values are consistent procurement, recruitment, training, appraisals and exit interviews. Consult and involve staff more in the running of a business.

Implement and Encourage Green Practices for Corporate Social Responsibility

Some suggestions to start with : Recycle paper, cans and bottles in the office; recognize departmental efforts. Collect food and donations for victims of floods, hurricanes and other natural disasters around the globe. Encourage reduced energy consumption; subsidize transit passes, make it easy for employees to car pool, encourage staggered staffing to allow after rush hour transit, and permit telecommuting to the degree possible.

Implement and Encourage Green Practices for Corporate Social Responsibility

Encourage shutting off lights, computers and printers after work hours and on weekends for further energy reductions. Work with IT to switch to laptops over desktop computers. (Laptops consume up to 90% less power.) Increase the use of teleconferencing, rather than on-site meetings and trips. Promote brown-bagging in the office to help employees reduce fat and calories to live healthier lives and reduce packaging waste, too.

CSR by FABER CASTELL

Nearly 20 years ago Faber Castell started to think ecologically and they began to plant special pines in the Brazilian desert far away from the rain forest, a place which has been thought of as uncultivable before. 10 years after the first plantings, Faber Cast ell started to cut this trees in order to make their pencils but every time they cut a tree they immediately replant a new one. So they can assure a certain stability in their wood supply without damaging the nature. Nowadays their artificially created forests have an extent of 10.000 hectares of land, provide a place to live for a huge number of different animals and are exciding even the wood demand of Faber Castell. For their ecological engagement Faber Castell also received several prices and awards
